‘New’ MP welcomed by Parish Council

04 October 2007

Files/Denby Shahid Malik MP was welcomed by members of the Parish Council in Denby Dale at a coffee morning last week. The Dewsbury MP stands to inherit Denby Dale and Kirkburton wards at the next election due to constituency boundary changes.

The government minister mingled with local councillors and residents at the council offices in Skelmanthorpe. Last week the MP received the unanimous support of party members and trade unionists as he was reselected to fight the election for Labour.

Kirklees councillor Maggie Blanshard said: "Shahid's energy, vision and commitment to getting the best for local people is evident. He's really taken to Denby Dale and I'm sure that come the general election Denby Dale will have really taken to him. Shahid has been a brave and committed MP for Dewsbury and I know he'll make us proud too."

Chair of the Parish Council, Graham Turner, said "I'm pleased that Mr. Malik will be able to fight for our corner in Westminster, and I'm really looking forward to working with him."

Shahid said: "It will be a privilege that my new constituency will include some of the most beautiful parts of the country and if the people I've met so far in Denby Dale and Kirkburton are anything to go by they are some of the friendliest in the country. It will be both a pleasure and a privilege to represent and work with them."
