New Minister helps out at Dewsbury Celtic fundraiser

25 July 2007

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik was guest of honour at a fundraising ball for Dewsbury Celtic last week, it was the Labour MPs first official appointment since the cabinet reshuffle and his first as a government minister. The event was held at Headingley stadium.

It was an entertaining evening with Graham Walker of Grumbleweeds fame keeping the guests amused during the evening.

Shahid said: "I am proud to consider myself part of the Dewsbury Celtic family - they are a fine club and the lads have done the town proud since the big step up to the Summer Conference. They work hard and are a truly professional outfit and credit goes to the players, their families and fans.

Dewsbury Celtic is so much more than just a rugby club it is an important part of our community and for me it showcases the family values and community spirit that I would like to see much more of in the constituency. A lot of the credit has to go to people like Tom O'Donovan who spearheads much of their work but also to people like Francis Cummins who is a true role model for our community."

Club Chairman Tom O'Donovan said: "Shahid has been a firm friend of this club and I know that his support is welcomed by all involved. It's always useful to have a big hitter like Shahid batting for you."
