Shahid to meet with key town centre players
26 March 2008
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik is set to meet with key players in his bid to kick start the regeneration of the town centre. Mr Malik will today (Friday 28th March) get together with the owner of Empire House, Shapoor Naghshineh to look at ways in which the under-occupied office block could attract new business and jobs to Dewsbury. The MP has been campaigning for Kirklees council to relocate jobs to Dewsbury and has cited Empire House as a possible location. In early April Mr Malik will also meet the owners of the Princess of Wales Precinct development, Ravenhill Estates. In recent weeks it was announced the two major retailers would be leaving the precinct.
Mr Malik has been leading calls for the council to prioritise Dewsbury and earlier this month held a meeting with local traders at which he said he wanted to see free parking in the town.
The MP said that whilst he had yet to receive a response from Kirklees on the issue of free parking in Dewsbury he was confident that the pressure brought about through his campaign would result in a victory for local people.
Shahid said: "I have impressed upon the decision makers within the council the need to deliver a quick win for Dewsbury. Introducing free off-peak parking on days when the town centre is less than lively is one way in which this can be achieved and I'm confident of a result on this issue."
