MP on course for reselection

14 September 2007

Files/USADewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik is on course to be reselected as the Labour Party candidate for the next General Election.

Mr Malik has so far won the nominations of party branches in Dewsbury East, South and Mirfield.

Labour's selection process gives a say to all members in the local branches as well as affiliated trade unions and socialist societies. Members in Dewsbury West, Denby Dale and Kirkburton are due to nominate ahead of the final selection meeting next Friday.

Dewsbury East Labour Councillor Eric Firth said that the branch was proud of what Mr Malik had achieved during his time in office to date: "Shahid received the unanimous support of members in Dewsbury East and it came as no surprise given the energy, vision and commitment he's given to this town. He's the hardest working MP Dewsbury has ever had."

On the re-selection process Shahid said: "The last two years have been the greatest privilege of my life and I would truly feel honoured to be the candidate at the next general election. It is now a matter for local labour party members and trade unions to decide if they think I have lived up to their expectations."

Mr Malik, who joined the Labour Party at 15, entered parliament as Dewsbury's MP in May 2005 and quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed by Gordon Brown as Minister for International Development in June of this year.
