Respect

Shahid wants to create a culture of respect in our communities

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has pledged to help create a culture of respect in neighbourhoods throughout Dewsbury, Mirfield and Heckmondwike.

Shahid says "I believe it's the duty of everyone to create a community where people help each other by standing up for those values which matter to us all and treating our neighbours as equals".

"It's vital that the local community is given the powers we need to tackle anti-social and disrespectful behaviour. Powers to deal with homes where loud music is constantly played, powers to issue Parenting Orders that mean parents who don't make sure their children go to school get help to change and sanctions if they don't. And support for local programmes that provide better facilities for young people."

"It's my job to make sure Ministers know what Dewsbury needs, to campaign for new powers needed by our police and council, and apply all the pressure I can to make sure they pay attention to the priorities of each and every neighbourhood. I want to work with everyone in Dewsbury, Mirfield and Heckmondwike to make sure they get the respect they deserve."

Eric Firth who was recently appointed as a case-worker by Mr. Malik, has taken responsibility for launching a listening campaign on the issue. "I fully support the government's recently launched Respect Action Plan. Over the next few weeks I will be working alongside our MP and helping to distribute surveys, speaking to people about their experiences and finding out what needs to be done to build more respect for all in the area".
